Dave and Molly’s book on horticulture

This Monday I got my copy of The Zen of CSS Design : Visual Enlightenment for the Web. I was happy and surprised to see that Dave & Molly had their book released this quickly. Of course I first flipped the book open to see if my design withstood the perils of print. Pleased with the result I started to flip through the book with a small curious feeling of satisfaction after seeing my name in print. Designers work mainly anonymously, we’re not the focus. Although what I did find is that the book does refer to the designers themselves more that one would normally see. Having said that the book is all about design and what CSS can do to help you achieve your goals. Not the other way round, I’m happy to say.

It’s really great to see like minded spirits in one publication of this nature. The effect of naming the project “css Zen Garden” obviously has had an effect on the results collectively. It’s a bit ‘leafy’ and is it me or are we starting to see of these kinds of design elements creeping into site designs these days? Surly the Zen Garden can’t be attributed to this phenomenon. My list of design no no’s is starting to get a bit long now. ;)

No unnecessary horticulture, rounded corners, 45-degree corners, flash preloaders for an 8kb image, flash portfolio’s presented as a book metaphor, Arrow’s that don’t actually point to anything. (That’s actually part of that late nineties 45-degree thing). Oh yeah, crumpled paper backgrounds or torn paper edges are out too. My beige / brown look is wearing a bit thin too. Hey, at least we can still flip though the Zen Garden site or book for some ‘inspiration’.
